Lots of shops, small museums (eg clog museum)- absolutely beautiful to see all the windmills around, some spinning and you can go inside and up a windmill (costs extra). There were staff doing demonstrations and explaining the process/Does the express bus from the Amsterdam Central Station stop nearer Zaanse Schans than the train...How many hours will it take to see all of this? Moreover, you are not allowed to get inside the mills with the Zaanse Schans Card. Among others, this includes the Van Gogh Museum (where your free entrance comes with a skip-the-line time slot) and the Rijksmuseum. Or book a day trip to Zaanse Schans from Amsterdam that includes round trip transportation, entry fees and lunch at the pancake restaurant. The museum is great but expensive.

It's free to enter the site however with the Zaanse Schans card you can get a lot more for your money, it is great fun for the whole family and is an educational experience where you can learn about the history and origin of this beautiful residential area. The Zaanse Schans is free to visit, but this card gives you all kinds of extras to make your visit even more enjoyable.
